Using Color to Influence the Mood of Each Room

April 24, 2012

Painting the inside of your home is an easy way to spruce up your space without breaking the bank.  Choosing a color can be daunting, but it can also open up the possibilities.  A little color on the walls can make a big difference. Research has shown that color can influence your mood and state of mind.

I have listed some colors to go with rooms that would bring uplifting moods and a peaceful and harmonious environment to your home.  Personal preference can play a big roll, but keep an open mind.

Living room & Foyer: Reds, yellows & oranges to earth tones, like browns & beiges

These colors stimulate conversation.  Soft oranges are an ideal feng shui colors to bring all the family members together.

Kitchen: Yellow & white

Yellows can lift your spirits and be energizing.  White promotes creativity and can help invent new recipes.

Dining room: Red, orange & green

Red is stimulating and encourages conversation, while orange brings positive energy and stimulates the appetite and communication.    Green makes food more appetizing.

Bed room: Cool colors, like blue, greens, lavender, and pink

These colors are calming and the darker the hue the more pronounced the effect.  Blue tends to ease anxiety.  Pink in the bedroom brings passion and love back into your relationship.

Bathroom: Blues, greens & turquoises

These colors give a sense of clean and fresh.  They also promote a sense of calm like a personal spa.

Children’s room: Blue & green

Blue is calm and restful where green promotes growth and stability.  Yellow is a bad choice for a nursery, because it can make babies cry more.

Home office: Green

Green is a great choice because it is good for concentration and is inspiring.  It is one of the best colors to be surrounded by for long periods of time.  But choose a neutral one so it is not too distracting.

Workout room: Reds, oranges, yellow-greens, and blue-greens

Red and orange can help you move, but they can also make you feel hot.  The yellow-greens and blue-greens are “happier” colors.
